SOUTHERN RAILWAY No. 630
"A Murphy Branch Freight"
Southern Railway No. 630 is a Ks-1 2-8-0 Consolidation built in 1904 by the American Locomotive Company. Originally serving the Southern on the Murphy and Lake Toxaway Branches in the mountains of Western North Carolina. The locomotive remains as the last steam locomotive to operate on the Lake Toxaway Branch in June 1952. After the Southern Railway dieselized, the locomotive was deemed surplus and sold to the East Tennessee & Western North Carolina Railway, where it operated as No. 207. The 630 and sister locomotive No. 722 were both sent back to the Southern in 1968, to be used as public relations tools for the Southern Railway's flourishing steam excursion program. The locomotive was removed from service in 1989 after pulling excursions for twenty years. After returning to service in 2011, No. 630 became the poster child for the Norfolk Southern 21st Century Steam Program. After the cancelation of the steam program in 2015, the 630 continues to operate on select dates throughout each operating season at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. Southern Railway No. 630 is one of five currently operable Southern steam locomotives. This will be the first solo photo charter for the Southern No. 630 at TVRM, and it will operate in a historically accurate Asheville division paint scheme, as shown in the first four photographs.
